A year in the making, this realistic rendering of Metro / smartbar in Chicago was commissioned by both the co-founder and lead promoter of Format Recordings. The original reference photo was taken by the clients.
A home base and relationship catalyst for an entire community of independent music lovers and creators, Metro / smartbar deserved the most diligent and painstaking execution of an artwork I have ever created. A true labor of love.
I have been going here since I was 15 years old. The crying once it was finished was so cathartic and filled with gratitude.
We had it custom framed at Blick - it now sits atop their mantle as the focal point of their art collection.

Commissioned by The Romolo Group (@properties) owner / lead realtor, Jen Romolo, as a closing gift for a special client. Jen's client lost her husband and has sold their home of 40 years so she may move out of state to be with her family. This really resonated with me as well, so when Jen approached me to draw the home on Laramie in Chicago I was immediately on board.

I was invited to create live art by Bridgeport Art Center’s Curator Marci Rubin, aka DJ Veganinblack, for her Satellite party at the historic site of Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago. I gifted her Cities In Dust I, and created two other pieces in the same vein for the evening. The title references the quintessential goth track by Siouxie and the Banshees; the style gives a nod to the apocalyptic future forthcoming due to climate change.

This abstraction of Chicago’s South Side Bridgeport neighborhood was commissioned by a dear lifelong friend. She saw my “Arch I” and “Arch II” paintings, loved the style, and requested one be done featuring her childhood neighborhood. The thick, soft paper with a live edge was primed with Golden medium to keep it from buckling, then float-framed.

Initially a friend commissioned me to paint him a photo I took at an underground party. As I struggled to work through the challenges it posed, I realized my heart just wasn’t in it. I threw it in the alley and started over. He asked me to do a cityscape merging different architectural styles - he’s an architect. After 2 comp drawings we settled on this. It is one of my largest oil paintings to date.

A friend whose mother past away is an avid lover of techno, specifically the style originating in Copenhagen, Denmark. To offer my support I gifted this drawing which explores the modern architecture boom there.

A job opportunity presented itself in Seattle and I was looking to immerse myself in its landscape. The iconic Space Needle provided a focal point with the surrounding neighborhoods and natural vegetation as an ideal backdrop. Sometimes I visit Kite String Cantina in Chicago’s Roscoe Village neighborhood and create watercolors in my sketchbook. After consulting with the bartender, we decided the New Orleans skyline would be a great option. Lights from the city reflect in the water.

Mutek Festival happens annually in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After attending in 2017 and 2018, I found my love for this city has deepened so I did a quick line study of its skyline. This piece was created at Kite String Cantina in Chicago’s Roscoe Village neighborhood.

I lived in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn from 2000-2006. My railroad apartment’s fire escape at my bedroom window provided a gridded perspective of the houses across the yard.

While living in Brooklyn I was struck by the way residences co-existed with the industrial landscape. This piece represents this discord within harmony, with explosions in the sky enhance a new way of depicting viewpoints created by the city.

A commission came in to feature landmarks in Rome, Italy as the design focal point for a wedding. Using reference of Rome’s architecture, landscape and landmarks, I combined each element to form a mural-style piece that was used on save the date cards, invitations and throughout printed material for the event itself. The couple was married at St. Peter’s Basilica which is the predominant reference point.
